In order to analyze increasingly more complex social phenomena in a comprehensive manner, interdisciplinary research through close contact and cooperation among disciplines is required more than ever. To that end, the Institute for Social Sciences Research (ISSR) was officially established on July 31, 2007 with the objectives of contributing to the advancement of all social sciences as well as of promoting the growth of each individual discipline in the social sciences. Our institute integrated seven then-existing research institutes: Regional Public Administration; Social Welfare; Social Research; Psychological Science; Mass Media Information; Political Strategies; and Information Resources.
Since its launch in 2007, the institute has been selected by the National Research Foundation of Korea (formerly Korea Research Foundation) as a grantee of funding for institutes conducting priority research. The funding has been given to our 9-year-long project entitled, "Socio-scientific research and policy development for the Korean society in transition to a multi-racial nation". Professors of the College of Social Sciences of Pusan National University and a number of experts in related fields are actively engaged in interdisciplinary research activities for this project.
Though the institute is relatively young, our members have been publishing a great number of research papers in world-renowned academic journals, and presenting papers at national and international conferences. We have published and translated books on multi-culturalism, and hosted annual conferences and special lectures on multi-cultural society inviting Korean and international experts as guest speakers and lecturers.
The institute intends to contribute to the development of the social sciences not only through interdisciplinary research work but also by further solidifying the research base by collecting data, hosting more frequent national and international academic exchange, and publishing academic journals and books.
More fundamentally, we endeavor to make meaningful contributions to the prosperity of our communities by analysing the problems we are facing in today's society and proposing viable alternatives.
